Felt-Tip Print ‘Classic’ (ref. 07)
Felt-Tip Print A1 ‘All the Colours’ signed, one of five identical (but different) prints made using every colour from the Winsor & Newton Promarker range.
This is one print from a set of five. They are all made at the same time, and share the same DNA and production choreography. Each marker held stationary by a custom made jig for varying durations on the stack of five sheets of A1 100gsm paper. Each of the five sheets has been at the top, middle and bottom of the stack during the ‘bleed’ process, allowing all five sheets to have a selection of ‘dot bleeds’. From the sharp rich marks when the pens rested directly on the surface, to the softer subtler tones when the paper was a layer in the small stack. A gently modulating field of colour and organic form, that calmly settles as the eye and mind adjusts.
594mm x 841mm (A1)
140gsm cartridge paper
Footnote: I first made Felt-Tip Prints ‘officially’ when I was a student at the Royal College of Art in 1998. I was subverting the marker pens my Dad used in his design studio that I encountered in the 1980’s. I always loved the consequential marks that his ‘Magic Markers’ made on the sheets of paper that sat below the page he was working on. The areas he lingered the longest the bolder the mark. So frustrated that my drawing and illustration abilities did not allow me to make the marker renderings I desired, I embraced my frustration, and literally removed my hand from the process and let the pen make the work. 30 years later, I am still exploring the same process and materials. I enjoy its connection to graphic design from days gone. Even though the ‘Magic Markers’ of the 1980’s are no more, the Winsor & Newton Promarkers still have ‘magic’ within when used like wands. I love the colours and forms these pens create, almost on their own, abracadabra…
